Unfortunately, you will be hitting the NYC metro area at rush hour. 8 AM would be the worst possible time to approach that area which you will if you hit the turnpike after delaware at 6. If they’re no accidents you could have very bad rush hour traffic especially is you are planning on taking the George Washington Bridge. I think you would be better off taking the turnpike to take 1 287 north to New State Thruway, over Tappan Zee Bridge to I 95 or Merrit Parkway. By doing this you will avoid both Lincoln Tunnel and GWB — no tolls on 287 until you have crossed Hudson. AT GWB the toll is on the Jersey side.
The person who said "traffic is going in the opposite direction" is misleading because all the time you are in NJ you are heading towards New York City at rush hour.
It’s a crap shoot cause there could be an accident on any of those roads that would screw things up. Suggest you listen to both 1010AM and 880AM for traffic reports as you get closer to the city.
Unless you are leaving Saturday(tomorrow) morining, then it will be a breeze which just occured to me after all this typing
Hope this helps
